Cash Movement Limits in Portugal: Declaration Requirement

Travelers entering or leaving the European Union through Portugal are subject to specific reporting obligations when carrying significant amounts of cash. Under applicable legal and regulatory frameworks, any individual transporting €10,000 or more in cash must declare this amount to the Portuguese Customs authorities.

This obligation applies to movements through both airports and seaports and forms part of broader measures aimed at ensuring transparency and preventing illicit financial activities within the European Union.

The declaration process can be completed in advance through the Portuguese Tax Authority Portal (Portal das Finanças). This platform provides a dedicated functionality that allows individuals to submit the required Cash Declaration for entry into or exit from the European Union in a simple and efficient manner.

Compliance with this requirement is essential to avoid potential penalties or delays during travel. Individuals are therefore advised to ensure that the declaration is properly completed whenever the applicable threshold is met.
